Moodbidri, also known as “Jain Kashi”, is a town and taluk in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. It lies 34 km northeast of the district headquarters, Mangalore. Moodbidri comes from two Tulu words, "mūḍu" meaning "east" and "bidiru" meaning "bamboo”. Moodbidri has a curious connection with the number 18 – it houses 18 temples, with 18 roads that connect the different villages in the vicinity, adorned with 18 lakes and home to 18 Jain Basadis. Moodbidri taluka consists of 28 villages. Residents of these villages come to Moodbidri for their higher education and medical needs.
We are working with the G V Pai Memorial Hospital (GVPMH), a 35 bedded hospital run by the G Vasudeva Pai Charitable Trust. The hospital caters to the medical needs of the residents of Moodbidri and the surrounding villages. The Hospital has two operation theatres, two labour theatres, neonatal ICU, a Casualty, a Trauma centre, a Pathology Laboratory, a 24 × 7 Pharmacy, a Post-operative ward, a Physiotherapy Department and CT Scan Sonology and C-ARM capabilities.
The hospital has experienced doctors and nursing staff and is well known in the community for their dedication and service to their patients.
Our engagement with the hospital is focused on assisting with the following problems:
- The lack of adequate intensive care unit (ICU) facilities at the hospital and critical medical equipment like ventilators and BIPAPs.
- The fact that the hospital is forced to refer away their patients who require intensive care to corporate hospitals either in Mangalore or Manipal which are 35 kms and 54 kms away.
- The lack of timely access to critical care for patients from the villages who are greatly inconvenienced due to distances they must travel to access life saving treatments
- The high costs of critical care for patients who often cannot afford the medical expenses in Mangalore or Manipal and the associated additional travel expenses incurred.

Our engagement with the hospital is focused on assisting with the following problems:
- Lack of adequate critical medical equipment like ventilators and C-paps at current 10 bedded intensive care unit (ICU) facilities at the hospital
- The fact that the hospital is forced to refer away their very poor (BPL) patients who require intensive care to other hospitals in the area due to lack of ICU equipment.
